The American Chemical Society (ACS) is excited to announce that Team USA earned two gold and two silver medals at the 55th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), held in Zurich on July 16 to 25.

Pictured above are gold medalists Anurag Sodhi (Maryland) and Phoenix Wu (Seven Lakes High School, Katy, Texas), and silver medalists Mingwen Duan (Connecticut) and Alice Liu (Missouri).

“This was my fourth and final opportunity, as a senior. It was such a uniquely difficult experience,” Wu says. “I would say the in-person experience is unparalleled.” The three prior events he participated in were online only, as a result of pandemic restrictions.

The ACS Greater Houston extends particular congratulations to Mr. Phoenix Wu of Seven Lakes High School for his gold medal performance as a member of Team USA!

The Greater Houston delegates had an enriching experience at the 2023 ACS Leadership Institute, an annual invitation-only conference where ACS leaders come together to learn both management and leadership skills to enable them to be successful leaders. This year's event was held January 20th - 22nd in Atlanta, GA. As a 2022 ChemLuminary Award winner, our section was also invited to present a poster describing our award winning activity.

Our National Chemistry Week Celebration at the Children's Museum of Houston was a resounding success! 46 volunteers participated from 4 local colleges; University of Houston Downtown, Texas Southern University, Rice University, and University of St. Thomas.

All of the interactive tables were led by our volunteers, and families visited tables for about 10-15 minutes at a time. Attendees interacted with samples of natural and synthetic fabrics (including fabric made from recycled plastic bottles!), tried their hands at block printing, made molecule models from Play-Doh, created their very own slime in various colors to take home, and experimented with an acid (vinegar) and a base (NaHCO3) to change the color of red cabbage juice and grape juice. All attendees and volunteers conducting experimental explorations practiced safety by wearing gloves and safety glasses.

Volunteers were treated with pizza at lunch time!
