  The theme for this year's annual STEM Expo is “Out of This World” — an interactive, family-friendly event featuring hands-on activities, community exhibits, and STEM career exploration opportunities hosted by San Jacinto College and Communities In Schools of East Harris County.

  The GHS is looking for 3 volunteers to assist with hosting a demonstration table at the San Jacinto STEM Expo on Nov. 13 from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm. (This time frame includes a safety training.)   The WCC Merck Research Award recognizes eight individuals who will present their research at a Women Chemists Committee/Merck half-day symposium during the ACS Fall 2026 Meeting in Chicago and be recognized at the Women Chemists Committee Luncheon. Applicants in their third and fourth year of graduate school with a research focus in one or more of the following – Organic, Medicinal, Analytical, Chemical Biology, Computational or Structural Chemistry, and related disciplines are eligible.

  This award is open to U.S. citizens (studying anywhere) and non-U.S. citizens attending a graduate program in the U.S. or Canada.

  The deadline for applications is November 15, 2025.

  LinkedIn for Chemists: Networking Made Easier

  LinkedIn contains a wealth of easily accessible information that used to be time consuming for job seekers to discover. LinkedIn profiles are a powerful tool to help job seekers network to form connections, to learn about career opportunities, and to collect information about potential employers.  In this presentation, I will walk through the sections of a LinkedIn profile and offer best practices for creating and optimizing your own.  Finally, I will share strategies to use LinkedIn to attract new career opportunities in the chemical sciences.

  Biography:  Katie graduated from the University of Rochester with her Ph.D. in physical chemistry, where she worked on nanotechnology projects using carbon nanotubes and semiconducting quantum dots. She relocated outside of Chicago to work as a Research Scientist for a small environmental lab that performed government contract work to develop printable carbon nanotube sensors to detect trace amounts of warfare agents. Katie also worked as a Lecturer at Valparaiso University, where she primarily taught non-majors (nursing and engineering) and general chemistry students, oftentimes using exciting (and sometimes tasty) demos. She currently serves as a Digital Faculty Consultant for McGraw-Hill and is back in the classroom as a culinary student! She's using chemistry to improve her own treats (French macarons, sourdough bread, and chocolate confections) and to teach students at Valparaiso University about the “Chemistry of Baking” (her dream job). In her free time, Katie enjoys volunteering as an ACS Career Consultant, traveling, and spending time with her husband, twin boys, and three golden retrievers. She finally admits to being a runner and is trying to run a foot race in all 50 states.

  Strong connections foster resilience and innovation and will help overcome challenges more effectively by leveraging shared knowledge, resources, and support. On November 19 at 2:00 p.m. ET, the WCC Women Chemists of Color will host its annual fall webinar featuring speakers Amanda Bryant-Friedrich, Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Dean of the Graduate School of the College of Pharmacy and Health Science at Wayne State University, and Kimberly Agnew-Heard, Director of Regulatory Affairs at Altria Client Services and ACS Director, District II, as they discuss how to overcome challenges through powerful human connections from both academia and industry prospectives. After the presentation, there will be a quick Q&A with the speakers followed by breakout sessions where attendees can discuss the lessons learned and share their ideas on the topic.
